How can I find out if there isCIFAS data or other data registered in my name
1. Obtain a copy of your credit file or credit report
Credit Reference Agencies may hold data about you, often referred to as credit files or reports.
Credit files contain public information (e.g. Electoral Roll, County Court Judgments), and an individual's private financial details (such as payment history data). Some information on your credit file is made available to lenders, insurers and other organisations. If you have taken out CIFAS Protective Registration or have been registered by one of our Members as a Victim of Impersonation, this will appear on your credit file.
You have the right to request a copy of any data held about you by the credit reference agencies. The cost varies according to the type of report you request, but starts at £2.
Your credit file can be obtained from the Credit Reference Agencies - click here to view their contact details.
If you believe that any of the information on your credit file is incorrect, the details that you receive from the agencies will explain how you can set about having it corrected. You may also be able to add an explantory note to your credit file.
2. Submit a Subject Access Request (SAR) to CIFAS
The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to know what information an organisation holds about you. . For a fee of £10 you are entitled to request a copy of any information held about you by any organisation on computer or in some manual files. This is known as a Subject Access Request.
If you wish to request a copy of any data held about you by CIFAS, please follow the procedure as explained on the Subject Access Request form and send your completed form to the address below.
Please note that CIFAS is not a credit reference agency and does not hold public information or payment history data. In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 our response will include only CIFAS data and not public information, payment history data or other fraud information.
